STATUS KEHALALAN E-NUMBERS

Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim.

Saat ini masih ada beberapa anggota masyarakat yang salah persepsi terhadap E-numbers (E-codes). Umumnya mereka mengira bahwa E-numbers ini adalah ‘kode-kode rahasia’ kandungan lemak babi. Misperception ini bermula dari beredarnya HOAX (berita bohong di internet) yang menyebutkan bahwa E-numbers yang tertulis pada kemasan produk makanan itu adalah kode rahasia bahan baku pangan yang mengandung lemak babi.

Agar tidak ada lagi yang salah persepsi, ada baiknya kita belajar mengenal apa saja sebenarnya E-numbers itu. Mari kita kupas secara singkat.

E-numbers (huruf E kapital yang diikuti 3 angka) ini sesungguhnya hanyalah kode-kode biasa yang dipakai untuk memudahkan identifikasi bahan baku (ingredients) pada kemasan produk makanan yang dijual di pasaran. E-numbers ditambahkan pada produk olahan pangan untuk memberikan pengaruh atau efek tertentu pada produk. Bahan-bahan tersebut dapat berupa bahan pewarna, bahan pengawet, bahan pengasam, bahan pemanis, bahan penstabil, bahan pengemulsi, maupun senyawa antioksidan. Bahan tambahan pangan (BTP) ini ada yang dibuat dari bahan organik (produk nabati atau hewani) dan ada pula yang dibuat dari bahan anorganik (campuran bahan kimia fabrikan). Oleh karena itu, status kehalalan E-numbers tergantung dari asal bahan baku yang dipakai.

E100 = pewarna kuning oranye yang dibuat dari kurkumin atau tepung kunyit.

Namun, kalau menggunakan lemak hewan haram atau lemak hewan halal yang tidak disembelih secara syar’i, maka statusnya haram.

E470-E483 adalah bahan-bahan pengemulsi/penstabil dari aneka senyawa garam atau ester dari asam lemak. Status kehalalannya tentu tergantung asal lemak yang dipakai. Jika ia berasal dari lemak nabati, maka ia halal dikonsumsi. Namun, jika ia berasal dari lemak hewan haram (babi) atau hewan halal yang tidak disembelih secara syar’i, maka ia haram dikonsumsi.

E421 = mannitol

Keterangan:
E420-E422 adalah senyawa-senyawa turunan alkohol dari gula/karbohidrat. Secara umum statusnya halal.
Gliserol (orang Amerika menyebutnya gliserin) ada yang dihidrolisis dari lemak hewani. Oleh karena itu, status kehalalan gliserol/gliserin tergantung dari status kehalalan lemak yang dipakai. Jika ia dihidrolisis dari lemak nabati, maka ia halal dikonsumsi. Namun, jika ia dihidrolisis dari lemak hewan haram (babi) atau lemak hewan halal yang tidak disembelih secara syar’i, maka ia haram dikonsumsi.

E440a = pectin (pektin)

E440b = amidated pectin

Keterangan:
E440a dan E440b ini adalah bahan-bahan pengemulsi/penstabil yang berasal dari karbohidrat bukan pati (NSP; non-starch polysaccharide) pectin dan turunannya (serealia/gramineae). Statusnya insya Allah halal.
E450 a,b,c = sodium dan potassium phosphates dan polyphosphates (fungsinya macam-macam. Insya Allah halal).
